I have no idea why I didn’t think of this. Here I’ve been trying to make wedges from thin strips and tapered the edges with a chisel. This’ll save me so much time lol

Important note, wedges used in the manner, need to be installed PERPENDICULAR to the grain of the board it is wedging/applying force!!!
Maybe make another video aboyt why that is!??!

It took me so long to figure this out. As a beginner, it was difficult and everyone just said “bandsaw”.

Half the battle? Is the other half red and blue lasers? (Gi-Joe for those not in the know!). Thanks Rex for another great short! Honestly, your shorts are some of the very few I actually watch.

I'll have to try this sometime. Usually what I did was just take a chisel and split off the ends of some scrap pieces of wood, which usually would split in a triangular fashion, and then I'd clean it up and flatten it/taper it a bit more if necessary with said chisel. This seems like it would be a lot faster.

Impressive squareness when you exited the bottom of that wedge cut sir.

Hey, putting in the extra effort is always worth that TIGHT joint

hmmm, I would have thought that the way to make them is for both sides to be beveled/have an angle. Never occurred to me that only one side needs to be beveled.

I just take thin rips and take them to the belt sander/ disc grinder. It takes away wood so fast it’s almost instant gratification for wedge making. Although I realize not everyone has access to that, my metal wedges take up all the time I save on my wood ones because I pounds those out by hand, oftentimes I work those out of bar completely cold.

I tell every one the step wedge is the hardest part of the custom ax and hammer handles. It can be challenging to get the wedge the right dimensions. And then getting it to fit in such that the joint is tight and looks good with no splits or other issues.

Many of mine need long thin tapers.

I get that it’s kind of a basic question, but I’m glad you went over it. I need a few of those just a rehandle some tools

So, knowing is half the battle, and a good wedge is half... That's the whole battle.

I finally figured it out guys
