"And then what happened?" was one of the most effective repeated answers that I developed when my kids were small and started to tell me something from daycare or primary school. This wording worked because it was neutral, welcomed more information, and signaled to myself that I needed to keep a lid on my eagerness to analyze or solve a problem.

I know that one of my personal shortcomings is jumping to hasty conclusions, which I learned from my parents. They would listen to one or two sentences and then go full steam ahead with interpretation, judgment, and advice. Because that so often left me feeling unheard, misunderstood, or unfairly criticized, I wanted to model something more patient and open-minded for my kids.

I still try to word questions as openly as I can, both with them and with other near and dear people, because that still seems to work well when they are grownups.
