Bill Nye 'The Science Guy' Refutes Bill Belichick's 'Deflate-Gate' Explanation

Bill Nye "The Science Guy" questions the science behind Bill Belichick citation of "atmospheric conditions" as the cause of the NFL playoff scandal involving the New England Patriots. Bill Nye also put in a last word for the Seattle Seahawks. Bill Nye argues that the most likely cause of deflation is a needle being used to remove air from the ball.

Bill Nye is correct about the rubbing of the football not being able deflate the ball at all, but he never mentioned the fact that the psi of the ball can go down being in a colder climate after being in a warm climate. Hell Bill Nye himself even said this on episode 8 of season 3 in 1995

Im a HUGE colts fan and I have been apart of them since I was born. I truly love the Colts. However I got to say the "deflated" football did not affect us. I counted on ONE play we had 5 missed tackles. Receivers were left wide open, we got beat off the line every time. Sorry colts fans I hate to admit it however it only makes sense...the deflated footballs did not beat us being out played and out coached did.

I'm not on either side, but this video doesn't actually explain anything. Bill Nye just says "It doesn't make sense." and there is no explanation. I can't find the full video of his interview anywhere. I rather like Bill Nye, but this is disappointing. There is no reasoning here, no explanation of the science, just a conclusion.

Amazing what 5 days can do. The refs didn't even log the PSI of the balls for either team before the game, meaning they didn't check. They simply held them and then approved them. That Patriots footballs could have been under 12.5 PSI from the very start. It's the refs job to make sure they at least meet that minimum before they approve the ball. They didn't do their job. 

No doubt this is a league wide issue as well. Aaron Rodgers said that he likes to over inflate the footballs to over 13.5 and that only sometimes the officials take air out of them to bring them back into the legal PSI range. Meaning they don't always actually test the footballs with a gauge. 


tl;dr The refs are lazy and don't do their job. The league will change the rules next season to allow a larger PSI range. Bank on it.
