2003 all the way, stick to the original art and its more kinda let you get into the kino's character.

I didn’t know the 2017 version is a remake! I still very enjoyed it. And I’m happy to hear there is a 2003 version for me to enjoy!

Regarding the 2003 one. I don't feel like there was any lack of personality in Kino to begin with. It felt more like a character made specifically matured and confident enough to the point where she can handle any difficult situation. Having a character like that would't create too much pressure on the outcome when Kino is in trouble, because the viewer knows that Kino is badass enough to handle it.
There is hardly any development of Kino as a character, and I think that's why it can seem like there is a "lack of personality". But I think the development of the character was specifically not included in the series as Kino is just an observer of the world and should not be the main focus of the show.

Also 2017 version animation looks cursed.

I watched the 2017 one and didn’t know it was a reboot while watching it I felt confusing how disconnected and short many of the stories are especially when it alternated between kino and shizu really wish I was introduced to this series by watching the original instead.

I wouldn't so much call her a self-insert so much as she was a Kuudere before they were mainstream.

The 2017 version seems like a disappointment, opt to not watch it anytime soon. Great Video!

Excellent, in depth analysis of the characterisation and themes. We are losing the 'less is more' approach, in favour of excessive stimulation and spoon feeding the viewer. I will probably avoid this new series altogether.
