Maiden Voyage Triad Pair Exercises - all instruments

Показать описание
Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock features a wonderful chord progression on which to practice a variety of colourful Triad pairs in different groupings of 3, 4, 5 and 6 notes that bring out the sound of each chord. The expansive lines of the triad pairs produce a modern, open sound. The exercises challenge the technique as the whole range of the instrument is employed.

What would be the first instance of triad pairs being used in Jazz? I'm thinking, maybe the head to 'Tickle Toe' by Lester Young? That melody sounds triad pair-ey to me

Play at 1.25x speed for a Mario Kart song.

Wow. So this is a tool that is used to improvise? Interesting. I’ll have to try this with music I learn. I wonder if this method would work if a chord was done with the melody being the Triassic extensions of a chord...

In your example, you show that it's okay to play a major triad (e.g. Dmaj) over the sus7 chord (e.g. Dsus7). Up to now, I often freak out when I have to play over a sus chord, thinking I have to remember to avoid the major 3rd so I don't spoil the suspended flavor.

So I guess I can conclude from your example that the sus is just color. It's not functional, right?

Of course, none of the chords in Maiden Voyage are functional.

Are there examples of when you would want to keep the sus flavor when improvising over a sus7 chord?

Love your lessons and material. You are the best!
