Martin Scorsese’s Forgotten Masterpiece

In this video essay, I'm re-treading Hugo (2011) by Martin Scorsese, a beautiful movie that I loved when I was younger but seems to have slipped out of memory.

This video features selected clips from Hugo and other Martin Scorsese films. And also features music from Howard Shore.

Truly wonderful and well put together Dave! As a kid, I loved Hugo, it really hit a spot for me and I wasn’t ever sure why. But as you pointed out, despite the awards for its technical efforts, it’s emotionally grabbing eager to be remembered (just like the story itself). I can’t believe I’ve only seen it once, will be watching it again!!!

hugo is woefully undiscussed for such a whimsical and beautiful movie. a tv channel where i live plays it every so often, and its always been uniquely charming

I haven't seen all of Scorsese's films yet, but I will still probably always consider Hugo his best film. After hearing the visual effects supervisor discuss the making of this movie, I'm even more in awe with this film, especially with that final moving shot that took forever to plan. And that music is gorgeous! I do love The Artist, but I still think this should have won Best Picture!

Beautiful videoessay! Sad that there are not many other like that, Hugo is really underrated movie. An aethetic treat that warms me in one of those cold winter evenings when I lack some magic in my life. Even though it´s a family movie, there is some surprising depth when you look for it. But the most magical thing about it us that you don´t have to. You can also just watch it as a kids movie and enjoy every minute of it.

i loved Brian Selznick's books and i loved the adaptations because they captured the feeling of the books so well while also standing amazingly on their own

this film got me into cinema. i already loved movies but this made me love... “cinema”. i fell in love with the technicalities and the art of films and begun a short obsession with george melies. 💝
