The Defense Communications Agency was founded in 1960 and headquartered on the site of the Three Sisters Antennas in Arlington, Virginia. Built in 1913, the antennas were used to send the first international signal across the Atlantic connecting with the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. In 1917, the United States' entry into World War I was announced globally via the Three Sisters. The antennas were removed in 1941 because they interfered with air traffic control into the new Washington National Airport.

DCA became the Defense Information Systems Agency in 1991.
