Plug Power CEO Andy Marsh on E-Mobility & Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demand


Andy explains, the difference between Hydrogen (produced by using fossil fuels) and Green Hydrogen (using renewable/green energy) and PlugPower’s intense focus on shifting fast towards Green Hydrogen production. Companies such as German Bosch and Chinese Diesel Engine maker, WeiChai, are investing billions into the HFC (Hydrogen Fuel Cells) market and its infrastructure, as to broaden its implementation. Regarding the passenger car sector, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai already offer FCEV’s (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles).

Albeit expensive, FCEV will eventually offer a viable and cost-efficient alternative to fossil fuel powered cars and even BEV’s (Battery Electric Vehicles), such as Tesla cars. Some analysts agree, that car producers only focusing on Battery Fueled e-Mobility, can expect strong competition from cars powered by Hydrogen Power in a not so distant future. The main advantages of Hydrogen Fuel Cell e-mobility: fast refueling, long range, high power density. Disadvantages: relatively costly (due to current low levels scaling) and the need of more infrastructure investments.

It cracks me up that Andy says: "I live in a condo. There is no way I could charge my car here." I live near Andy and know his condo. The below parking where he parks his car at the condo is perfect for charger installs. There's a nice pillar next to just about every parking spot. Really, a CEO visionary like Andy can't envision installing chargers in his condo, how sad is that? I also pass by his business all the time. He has a 26-mile commute How about installing chargers at his workplace? He is the CEO, right? The area that Andy lives in can have chargers installed for free through the NYSERDA ChargeNY program. Many other businesses around Andy have them installed. Is it any more convenient than that? I think we all know the real reason why Andy doesn't drive a BEV or provide charging for his employees.
