한국, UN인권이사국 6번째 선출… "北인권 논의 적극참여"

South Korea was elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the next three years.
It has vowed to actively participate in international discussions on human rights issues, including those on North Korean human rights.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Bae Eun-ji reports.

South Korea has secured a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for the 2025 to 2027 term.
The country received 161 votes out of 190 voting countries in an election held in New York, on Wednesday local time.

"The following 18 states have just been elected members of the Human Rights Council, Republic of Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand "

Out of a total of 47 seats, 13 are assigned to the Asia-Pacific region.
South Korea was among six nations that competed, along with Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Cyprus, and the Marshall Islands with Saudi Arabia the only candidate not elected.
This is the sixth time that South Korea has been elected as a member since the council was first established in 2006.
It last served during the 2020 to 2022 term, but failed to be re-elected in 2022.
Seoul's Foreign Ministry emphasized its commitment to contribute to universal values and vowed to take an active role in North Korean human rights issues.

"As a member of the Human Rights Council for the next three years, our government will actively participate in discussions on major human rights issues, including North Korean human rights and take part in the global community's efforts to protect and promote human rights."

Wednesday's election means that South Korea will simultaneously serve on three of the UN's major bodies next year including the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and the Human Rights Council.
The ministry explained that this reflects the international community's positive evaluation of South Korea's efforts aimed at supporting United Nations' activities, and pledged to contribute to the global community in all areas, including peace and security, development, and human rights.
