It sounds like such an odd sentence to say: “Yes Sir, I do enjoy this part of the garden very much. You can put your hat back on.” It suddenly becomes code for “let’s talk.” 🤔

Goodness, I was just wondering whether I should let poor Augustus roast his dear blonde head in the sun or not. I should hate for him to think i did not appreciate his delicate gesture, but I should also hate for him to collapse on the rose bushes Mama loves so. Now I know!

“Oh yes, Mr Gladstone, splendid weather indeed. If you want, you can pop that beanie back on.”

I would not have guessed that. I assumed that he would want to keep his hat off so that his hair could be properly admired. Hollywood actors are always so anxious to uncover their heads, whether their characters are in space or on a battlefield.

These small yet important etiquettes actually used to give out suitable messages to each other. Non verbal communication in its best form 👌

Thinking of the movie The Big Monty. They strip to 'you can leave your hat on'.

If the gentlemen is not to your liking, feel free to offer no reprieve.

I honestly wish we had more etiquette now. It helps to have rules so that everyone’s desires and intentions are out in the open. It also helps avoid miscommunications

It's (legit) interesting how an English man taking his hat off irl showed respect, but also was, like, right up there with broken vases as The Viriginity Metaphor in French art

My first question would be "how the hell did you get into the garden?"

Ask the visitor would they like some tea. Serve tea biscits or finger sandwiches, or cornbread and butter. Serve water at least! If its close to dinner time, ask them to dinner at your house. (Mammy told Scarlet O'Hara that.)

Women now: I am either equal or inferior
Women in the Victorian era: I am superior, and if you ever hurt me just know I'm the one in charge of your food and linens.

This seems like it was invented by women to be a subtle way of indicating their interest! By telling a man to put his hat back on you’re telling him you want him to stick around 👀

This so reminds me of the book "What to You Say Dear?" my dad used to read. Just the way you phrased it, but also the introduction of manners :)

Honestly I was expecting that etiquette would be to invite him over to a covered trellis or tree nearby where there was shade and the two of you could be out of the sun. But I suppose that would be too close to an improper dalliance, now wouldn’t it?

Do not maintain eye contact and keep it to weather and health
