I'll tell you this (true story): I called my friend long-distance, internationally. We had a standing agreement to let him call me because he had a much cheaper phone plan (way back in the day).
But for some reason, that day I felt compelled to call him.
His phone rang 3 or 4 times and a wave of INTENSE FEAR washed over me, out of nowhere.
Why? 3 or 4 rings is nothing, especially as he was an avid gardener and might well have been in his garden. Or out shopping (landline).
Why the fear?
He did answer.
We spoke.
And an autopsy confirmed that he probably died that same day or the next day.
Whatever consciousness is, it has different limits than we suppose.
He was my best friend, we had lived together more than once. We had not seen each other in person in nearly a decade.
And I called him right before he died and felt a completely uncharacteristic fear when he did not instantly answer the phone.
