In theory, poor quality or over-pricing should be solved by the market in the long term. But if it's a product or service requiring an extensive development over a long period of time, a big company could rinse out the competition periodically by underpricing for an extended period of time. Once all developing or growing competition are wiped out, the big company can revert back to over-pricing or underdelivering.
Just the possibility of this happening can be enough to deter large investments in an industry in which a strong monopoly is present. The free market would cause investors to put their money in other (newer/trending) markets instead.
Not saying this to argue that government intervention is necessary, but I also don't see how this can be completely prevented by a free market alone.
