This video is about the REAL personal experience of myself and people I personally know in Japan. Some will have had different experience, but based on MY OWN experiences, this does describe the relative norm as a westerner in Japan.
That being said, things seem to be trending in a generally positive direction of progress.

I do appreciate the constructive replies to this video, not so much the racial slurs made towards my family and myself 😅, but;

I feel the point of this video is being missed, and that may be my fault.

Though it may have come across as me saying Japan has to change, it's was meant to be more as commentary on why the vast majority of foreign residents don't stay in the country, hence the title of the video saying exactky that.

Everyone wants to blame immigrants without acknowledging that Japan is lovely to visit but very unwelcoming to its residence who look different. Forget the immigrants for a moment and think about why native born biracial citizens massively chose to give up Japanese citizenship when Japan makes them pick 1 passport. This is not a statement for or against Duel-citizenship but a question of why people rarely choose Japan.

The points where I suggest how Japan should change in the future is not to say they "must" and not for me personally, but only to say that if they don't, as their birthrate collapses, they won't attract immigrants and in my life time the Japan we all love will fail to exist as a 1st world nation.

P.S. please stop calling my child an abomination for being born multi-racial. It's a bit on the nose for how pointy your white hat is.

Most of Asia is like that too, not just Japan. I've lived in Australia so I can understand why you as a Westerner feel that way. Truth is most Asian countries are homogenous, so they will never see Westerners or Africans etc... the same as them. Well there are some exceptions like Singapore or Malaysia, but most Asian countries have the same mindset as Japan.

I lived Japan for 3 in the early 2000s and I ended up leaving too despite speaking and reading fluent Japanese. It just becomes unbearable. Honestly I think the non Japanese speaking foreigners have an easier time in Japan. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Even here in America I can still read the racist comments Japanese people leave online on Yahoo Japan articles.

Nice video. I live in Tokyo too. I definitely agree with the points. Finding an apartment is the worst lol.

The fact that noone would talk to me in Japanese used to really annoy me too, there's definitely a case of 空気読めない going on. Now i just flip it back on them politely and say "oh you wanna practice you're English!"

To be fair if i saw a Japanese person back at home I'd probably start talking Japanese out of excitement too lol.

The friends thing is also tough, the best way I found to make Japanese friends is joining some kind of sports club that has very few foreigners.

I find that most are fine speaking Japanese with me once we get acquainted. I simply ignore the retarded attempts at talking to me in English / or reply only in Japanese. What kind of funny is, after having had a conversation in Japanese for 30 minutes, people will still go “OMG you know how to use chop sticks” 🤣🤣 I love living here but I wouldn’t work here ever again. Overseas clients working from home living here enjoying the convenience and opportunities to enjoy the mountains is what does it for me. I don’t really care what people think about me which makes it easier.

It's a cultural difference and it's not going to change simply because you are annoyed by it. If you decide to live in foreign country, then you will have to understand their culture and accept it whether it is morally right or wrong.

Well, you can literally never be Japanese. I understand the frustration of being told that you can't speak Japanese (even though you can) or frustration with mixed race children who grew up in Japan being treated as though they just hopped off a plane. However, I don't think a person who came to Japan as an adult can ever really be "Japanese". I know some immigrants who came to Australia 30 years ago (when they were adults) but I don't consider them as Australian, and they don't consider themselves as Australian either because they're not. I'm in my early 20s right now and even if I spent the rest of my life in Japan, I'll never consider myself as Japanese and I wouldn't expect others to think of me as Japanese either.

Interesting. None of this surprises me as I lived in Japan for over three years in the late 80s / early 90s.

What do you mean Japan is "Conservative"? I'm Conservative and immigrant and we have no problem with immigrants. I don't get where people got this idea that Conservative people hate immigrants. That's totally false. Maybe some do, but they're a real little minority, not the majority. I really hate when people say this.

Do you live here? No, it's easier to commute from Portland, Oregon every other day :)

You might speak the language but they will never see you as Japanese. They have a very clear idea who's Japanese, who's similar to Japanese (Koreans, Chinese etc...) and who's not Japanese.
