Steve lives in the world of monsters. So the probability, that someone peaceful comes to him, is very small. In real life this works in the opposite order: if a boy tries to get acquainted with a girl, then the girl usually thinks, that he is a maniac or another freak.

Knowing how weak Steve is at killing mobs in single handed combat, it is natural that he would be dependent on redstone engineering to defend himself and his house.
Alex should have forseen that a man of contraptions like Steve would in no way permit anyone to just wander about near his home.
