I want you to know that I appreciate your assistance here. This problem has frustrated me for days... install... uninstall and on and on (I believe 5 iterations). Finally my assumption was that by now the registry had so much garbage that MySQL would never work.
Your directions were perfect, also.
I love knowing there are so many people with more talent, skill and experience than I have.

Works great on Win8 Pro 64Bit except with 1 difference.
- Local Services-> Properties->Log On: I must switched manually to "Local System Account"

I dont have mysql server instance configuration and without it I cant finish this tutorial. I have tried to uninstall and install mysql several times and i have removed all the files and folder named mysql both in ProgramFiles data folder as well as in Program Files folder. I cant get it to work. I have also disable UserAccountControl. Any ideas?

This did not work for me while trying to fix 5-5-17 on a Win7 64 Machine after a failed post install configuration. The instance Config tool failed to start the service. I'm giving up for the night... maybe tomorrow. :|

it's not helping. I followed all your steps but I am unable to reinstall mysql. It showing Internal error.(Configuration system failed to initialize) The installer will now close. What can I do for that.
