In forestry a tree whose growth is hindered by a neighboring tree is called "suppressed." And yes these trees do have a surprising number of rings for their size. They are older than they look.

I love using wood with really dense rings on the lathe. With cross grain work tearout is a huge consideration because there is no way to "cut downhill" around the entire piece. That kind of wood always just turns so smooth and consistently, little tearout and imo looks sooo much nicer in most situations than huge rings.
Sometimes fast growing stuff can be good too. Did some elm hollow spheres where i included the pith and the larger rings just worked really well for the shapes.
