I think the more focal point of this message should be, “learn the song that YOU want to be able to play”. My biggest motivation when I started playing drums was to be able to play my favorite songs by my favorite band at the time (Muse). And it was a hell of a motivator to get good, fast.

I had been playing as a concert percussionist for about a year and a self taught kit player for half of that before I started taking jazz lessons for the kit, so I didn’t have the “first lesson experience” most people have, but rather a show of my rudimentary skill and knowledge to gain more understanding about where I was as a player. My kit teacher then went quickly thorough, while still being relatively thorough, the first few lessons to be taught. Part of that was because I picked everything up quickly due to my prior experience in percussion and kit.

There are so many things songs can teach you that nothing else can. I learned Smells Like Teen Spirit my first lesson.

Depends, I started learning rudimental drumming for marching snare and have gone through many method books on drumset. But I'm a percussionist not specifically a Drumset player although at this point in my senior year I might go to be primarily a set player. So the method I've been taught by multiple teachers all involve getting technique, coordination, and chops up before applying ideas to songs. You can play any song if you can isolate practice to specific "tools" from my experience so far. I have been incorporating songs into my practice but as I'm in high-school I play such a wide variety of styles and music programs I don't have a need to practice individual charts at the moment. I will take time to work on creativity and such when needed and do pick up ideas from recordings. I'm mainly a jazz drummer, and right now a lot of my learning is coordination applied to samba. I found it helpful to learned to play relaxed rather then hop into charts they may be ablve my ability. But this applies to my specific case and the activities I do involving drums as I have played a ton of charts with a various groups this year.

Clearly, I'm an anomaly. I play whatever comes into my wee little brain. Context....I don't play for anybody, or with anybody. And love drills that take me wherever. Like hitting thousands of hook shots off of pine needles to a green surrounded with trouble. The grind is beautiful in its simplicity.

As a drum teacher ; your first lesson should be how to properly hold the sticks followed by a single stroke roll. The next thing would be double strokes followed by a simple beat.
Learning a song on the first lesson is trying to run before you can walk.

My first song was a KISS tune called Firehouse. It had a cowbell part too, which I actually had for some reason.

I just started last September, first song I set out to learn was YYZ, and then Red barchetta. Seems laughable, but I've got at least 50% of both those tunes, plus rudiments and other beats including some improv. Now I'm hooked for life, my stringed instruments are getting dusty in the corner lol
