I believe it was 1962 popular science had an article about nibiru and a picture of it on the cover.

Fun Fact: Lieder, one of the people who popularized the theory, claimed to be a messenger of the Zeta Reticulants, inhabitants of a far away star system that were credited with alien abductions. Coincidentally, there's a Yugioh card called "Zeta Reticulant" which has both an effect to summon tokens (known as Eva Tokens) and and an effect to summon itself from the hand by tributing said tokens. Perhaps this is where the token part of Nibiru's effect came from?
