If it helps encourage to read on Brandon has talked about how the first book is mostly set up. The first book had to establish the final empire and our chracters relation to it, but I promise the rest of the series picks up quite a bit more. I didn't fall in love with the series till the end of the second, but I get not wanting to hold out that long.
