In this video Claire from CLR Law takes us through the legislation.

Transcript:

We've all heard of the Data Protection Act.

And we all know that we have to abide by the eight core principles whether we are an employer or an employee handling data.

So what should you do on a day to day basis to comply with the Act?

You have to ensure that personal data is processed fairly and lawfully and that the data is only obtained for one or more specified purposes.

So make sure that you only ask for information that you need and unless they are needed destroy documents relating to unsuccessful candidates after six to nine months.

Regularly review staff files to ensure that the information is still relevant and accurate.

Make sure that information relating to staff is kept secure.

Destroy any irrelevant or out-of-date information securely and confidentially.

And lastly, ensure that any monitoring policies complies with the Act.

If you find yourself in a position where you are unsure how data should be handled or need to handle a subject access request and don't know how to proceed then give us a call at CLR Law.

We're happy to help.
