I first came across the Ralpha music group while reading Michael Hutt’s biography of Bhupi Sherchan.
It could be just a coincidence, but in Tibet of yore, Ralpha or Ralpa is the name given to wandering minstrel groups from Eastern Tibet who perform acrobatic dances accompanied by hand drums similar to the ones used by Nepali jangris.
The literal meaning of Ralpa རལ་པ་ is: 1. Worn out or torn 2. Dreadlock.
Some say the name of these minstrels comes from the Tibetan word Respa རས་པ་ which means someone wearing cotton clothes. Milarepa, the great Tibetan yogin wore just a cotton loincloth in the freezing cold of Tibet thanks to his spiritual attainments. His followers who wore cotton clothes and roamed the land on alms rounds singing their master’s spiritual songs (Doha) were known as respas.
