The conversation's not hard to have, Stevie, hell. You know these folks out here _cain't_ sang which is why you have to give vocal lessons to so many established "singers."

R & B is not dead...it's on life support, but definitely not dead. I feel sorry for the junior flips nowadays though, because THE STORIES set to music when I was growing up...70's & 80's (plus, I listened to my parents doowop & Motown) man, those LOVE songs had me wanting to speed up time and hurry up and grow up so I could fall in LOVE! Basically what I am saying is: the music is reflecting society...I am going to give you a song title. by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway "WHERE IS THE LOVE?" which was covered so lovely by Stephanie Mills and Robert Brookins (RIP)

I dont think it's dead at all but not a huge genre in America anymore. British artist are killing it and the American artist are underground

Thanks for sharing our music history
If it’s not R&B it’s labeled soul to draw folks in

R & B is on life support. I am 68 and I grew up with real music. Thank God for Bruno Mars. I hope our music makes a comeback. I am running out of time.

I just think it’s dumb when people say RnB is dead. It’s not dead, YOUR version of rnb is dead. Rnb is always revolving. And when Chris brown, Tory lanes, b tiller are out of the picture, my version of rnb will be dead AS WELL

There r still Moldy Figs who believe that jazz turned wrong in the 1920's when it became scored. But i dont think the analigy answers the question well.

This narrative is old, tired, and false. Y’all want to kill it so badly. The issue is lack of creativity, tired subject matter, and no true sense of collaboration.

As with most music today- it’s formulaic and watered down. Also, most of the artists are unattractive (see Jacques, Daniel Cesar, etc). 🤷🏽‍♂️

We don’t have the youthful equivalent of Ginuwine, Usher, Htown, etc. Instead we have a whole bunch of unkempt, tacky dressed, no vocal training, no stamina having wannabes.

And I’m just speaking in regards to men. The women will always reign supreme in this genre because they are always more daring and willing to take risks.

With LOVE, Doowop has nothing to do with Jazz. Yes, Music and the World's is changing. My problem with singers today is, they subtract,
meaning they leave out important things.

Everybody today sounds the same. They all copying Kim Burrell's riffs and vibrato, but Nobody can touch her. The other thing is Kim is being innovative & is being herself.

You young folks 2day r trying to be Kim. Vibratos r no longer pretty & tones r thin. And singing is no longer about feeling, it's only focused on showing off and riffing the song to death and leaving out the Melody.

That's Not evolution that's subtraction from the Art. Donny Hathaway could sing a 1 Long straight note and destroy every last singer on Earth today with Pure Emotion.

2Day the song is no longer Sacred, it's all about the singer.
You young folks today don't understand GIVING to the audience. It's all about taking Phrase.

So for me, no matter how many chops you have, its not singing if you can't move folks like Donny and the rest of the singers from back in the day.

Technically you folks r on point but you're yall completely neglect Tone, Feeling, The Melody, & Individual expression. Whitney did Not sound like Aretha, Chaka didn't sound like Gladys, & Stevie didn't sound like Donny or Peabo.

But 2day you no longer hear character Warmth, Beautiful or Tone. You just hear a Barrage of riffs. And soon as I hear the 1st verse, I've heard everything these folks have. Because throughout the whole record that's all they're gonna do. So their's no need to listen to the rest.

That's the difference between, back in the day & 2day .
This is NOT Evolution, it's SUBTRACTION. You young folks r supposed to take it to the next place and you are, but you're also leaving out the most important things.
Understand, Your TONE is your Presentation, & 1st impression.🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️ I have a Ton of Respect for Stevie Mackey, this Wonderful Cat has Knowledge & is Gifted. ❤
