The oldetime strongmen performed feats of strength that defy imagination, all in an era before the advent of bodybuilding, which shifted the focus to aesthetics over function. The tools used were simple, barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, as well as regular everyday things like nails, cards, horse shoes and chains.
Here are few workout ideas that are very much inspired by the training used by the oldetime strongmen. It uses only one dumbbell, but the movements can just as easily be adapted to other weights like kettlebells or barbell. There are a number or ways to progress the sequences: by adding reps, using ladders (1 press, 1 squat, 2 press, 2 squat), or manipulating the rest period between sets.
The key is to work safely, with good form and gradually increase your workout volume over time.
