It's only derogatory if you use it in a derogatory way

“Words only have the power you give them” is a quote I often follow. Because it’s true. No matter the word, words will only have the meaning, tone, or emotion behind it that you gave it.

Words can be powerful. Why do you think people go to war over them?

Im mixed and dont even use it very much, so I do find it very jarring when people who aren't of African American descent use it commonly. Maybe later down the road it'd be normal, but i just dont vibe with that yet

A lot of white people get offended hearing that word. So, you know. Keep on keeping on.

exactly. words have the power you give them. that's why it makes sense for certain groups to reclaim the words that were used as a weapon against them and embrace it.

How i do love people that say it like it is.

Words hold no intrinsic power except for the power people put in them be they good or bad. Let them hold you in their grip and you will be forever bound by them.

Im from a time bullies would go about calling me and friends: nerds, geek, dork, weeb, etc for our hobbies. Those word could never hurt me nor my friends because it became a badge of honor in our eyes. Now those words today hold next to no meaning to be hurtful like they did in the 80's and 90's.

I love how people who are agreeing with this aren’t even black

From my perspective it’s more of *why* people who aren’t black want to use it so bad (coming from a black person who doesn’t really use it myself)

As a black and gay person, the n and f slur have been used by people not in our communities to insult and dehumanize us for centuries. Being able to reclaim them for ourselves is quite liberating for some of us. If a black person wants to say the n word, I think that's perfectly fine.

i hate how slurs have become sort of a privilege to say. people are acting like the n word pass is an actual thing, and that being gay blesses you with the ability to say the f slur. could we just stop acting like it's some real-life power-up?

A girl in yr 7 called me the n word she’s white by the way and I’m mixed race and although I wasn’t offended or hurt by it I still reported it so that she knew she shouldn’t use that sort of language it depends on the person but I just think it’s not a good word to use and you can’t just throw it around and expect people to just be accepting of it cos not everyone is
