The Problem With the Anime Community Right Now...

It feels like no one wants to discuss anime that isn't mainstream anymore. This year shows that normally would be discussed aren't being talked about as much and I wonder what happened?

Something ive noticed about 2023 compared to any other year is how almost everyone is barely discussing shows that aren't insanely popular more so than normal and I have to wonder what happened?

I think one of the reason could also be because for some few years ago we got too much free time because of the quarantine and now that everyone slowly went back to their busy life we became more picky with what shows to watch in such little free time that we have, resulting in less discussions over the lesser known shows.
Also funny enough, I've noticed that during the pandemic everybody suddenly become anime watchers 😂

I have noticed it. I mainly watch discussion on YouTube and sometimes the creators will say if they don’t get enough views, they’re dropping the discussion. That really disappoints me because usually it’s a show I really like but since no one is watching their content, they drop it.

It takes a certain kind of personality to adventure outside of what's being advertised, what has the most hype, etc.
Especially when there's so many shows that many can't really take the time to watch anything they're not sure if it'll be good.
Unless a few loud voices on social media start gushing about a sleeper show, it probably won't be noticed.
In that regard, I'm happy for your vids in my sub feed for seeing shows outside of the normal discussion range.
As well as for most channels, talking about the big shows is guaranteed traction for the vids, so it's only by principle that they would talk about anything else.
I'm liking or loving My Happy Marriage, Undead Girl Murder Farce, Dreaming Boy Is A Realist, Seven Spellblades, Masterful Cat, Dark Gathering, Synduality Noir
It also feels like a catch-22 where you want people to talk about it, but also you don't want to really force people outside of their comfort zone?
Idk, this comment is so rambly I'm not even sure where my thoughts are at this point lol

I think there s too much good stuff this year both in the popular side and in the hidden gem territory.
Not to mention the good popular shows that are getting delayed episodes and will end up coming back at later points to restart discussion taking more attention off of the more obscure ones.

We're at the era of the influencers and it's just bad. If a big influencer says it's good, then everyone follows. If big influencer says it's bad, it gets trashed by everyone.
Like you mention, it's less of a problem gaming wise, as no influencers have as much impact overall as anime side, except for MMORPG where some like Asmon are quite impactful.

Anime and content overload. So much to follow. Not enough time grinding.

Some people say the anime community is spoiled by shows like JJK and demon slayer. I say the anime community has become ungrateful and everyone's a critic nowadays instead of a consumer. I'm 34 gonna be 35 in October and it was hard ot watch anime back in the day. It was even harder to be a anime fan people looked at you funny. watched the Original airing of dragon ball in the 90's on UPN. People dont realize Toonami was as a godsend to the people who wanted so watch good anime back in the day. almost no sakuga in any of those shows and i loved it. watching that kept anime alive in the west. it just hot takes if it isn't a masterpiece nowadays. NOW IS THE BEST TIME FOR ANIME AND FAN DONT WASTE IT BEING A HATER. The world sucks so love some anime and find a bit of joy.

I feel even aot is suffering from this. After the series ended, nobody wants to talk about it other than to shit on it. Even when the new episode dropped, people talked about it for a week or two and moved on. I never see people talk about the plot or characters anymore. Even tho Netflix screwed over Jojo, I barely see anybody really talk about Jojo despite a new manga part being made rn.

I've actually fallen away from most of the big name shows. I haven't watched the latest season of Demon Slayer, Bleach and just plain quit watching Chainsaw Man. I haven't started Mushoku Tensei season 2 or Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 yet either. I've been loving some of the lower tier anime like "Classroom for Heroes" and "Am I Actually the Strongest?", though. I watch what I want to watch and skip what I want to skip. Maybe I'll come back to some of the bigger anime later, but several of them really just don't keep my interest anymore.

As someone who follows r/anime, yeah the discussion seems to have died down quite a bit. I think a major reason for that is the blackout which killed some of the 3rd party apps and the people who used those just gave up on reddit.

But I also agree that the discussion did die down with lesser known shows. Everyone just wants to follow the next hypetrain and has developed, and its harsh to say it, a "sheep-like" mentality. They only follow the herd and rarely venture out and find things out for themselves. People seems to focus on the easy way out and not give too much effort into anyhting these days. We can see the trend in social media with short form videos becoming so popular.

I agree. If the Anime isn’t mainstream and big personalities aren’t pushing it. People won’t try them on their own. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I would say a part of it is definitely that there is so much anime to consume that it’s hard for many people to go beyond. What is the most popular shows for a season.

There's a reason I avoid all online internet content like a plague, until this channel of course.

I'm just in my own little bubble. And on that note, when I looked forward 3 seasons I was so damn excited.

Eminence in the shadow season 2. Spy x Family season 2. Rising of the Shield Hero season 3. Dr Stones second cour of season 2. Dead mount death play season 2. Faraway Paladin season 2.

That's just next season. I'll go on. After that we get Solo Levelling finally, best damn manga. Oh and classroom of the elite season 3. Oh and Tsukimichi getting a double cour season 2. Oh and Mashle season 2.

Like holy shit man. At the end of the day, I dont care what any wider anime community thinks. They can hate on every single one of these, popular or unpopular, when I watch and cherish that show, that's all that matters to me.

Did I mention that one season later brings Reincarnated as a slime season 3 and the second cour of Mushoku Tensei? Oh I love anime

Hells paradise is a perfect example, if an anime doesn't have constant s quality animation, people will drop it.

It's just a thought, but one possible reason is because anime is becoming more mainstream. Such a thing will ultimately lead to a big gravitation on what is considered mainstream at the time, as more and more people are watching mostly or only such anime.
Other possible factors could be waves of burnout, things just not clicking with people, new shiny toy is shiny.
It truly is its own social activity now, watching anime. And so most people will likely watch what others are in order to have conversation about it. They don't have to convince someone to watch it too, since the majority already are.

Part of it has to do with the importance of production value, preseason hype, less time for people watching stuff compared to covid times and also it depends on where a show is streaming in regards to how much discussion may happen. It also feels like the amount of new fans has maybe stagnated a little so discussions are not as much now. Also some studios are getting positive and negative reputations nowadays for some people too sometimes.

Also side note: what did you think of level one demon lord and one room hero? Did you check out insomniacs after school, skip and loafer and dangers in my heart a bit last season? Those ones have had some hype around them too or some good things said

I love finding hidden gems. My 2 favorite shows this season are My Happy Marriage and Undead Girl Murder Farce.

I'm fortunate enough to have a coworker that I can talk with on occasion regarding anime. He recommended some shows I had never seen previously like "Taisho Otome Fairy Tale." There are a lot of good shows this season and I think that maybe some people might be feeling a bit overwhelmed by the variety available. But then again, it could be something else.

One word: TIME. With so many anime, you can either discuss what you've just watched, or watch another from the seemingly endless list of must-watches ;)
