Microsoft’s Holoportation™ Communications Technology: Facilitating 3D Telemedicine

Microsoft Research is collaborating with the UK National Health Service and the Ghana Ministry of Health to facilitate 3D Telemedicine. This video provides an overview of Microsoft's Holoportation™ communications technology, as well as the accomplishment of the first international multi-disciplinary team pre and post-op meeting (from Scotland to Ghana) using the system.

Summary: Microsoft Research developed a technology called hallaportation which was used to provide an in-person pre-op and post-op experience without the need for travel. Mr. Lowe, a surgeon in Scotland, asked Microsoft Research if they could use hallaportation to provide a conference call between Scotland and Ghana so that doctors could better visualize the patient and understand the surgeries that needed to be performed. Microsoft Research is now looking into how to provide access to rural and underserved locations, as well as how to translate plans into live surgery. The residents have become very excited about the possibilities of this technology.
