I have the Playmakers DVD still to this day. They only made 1 season of the show and it was so gritty. I remember coming to school and talking about the show with my classmates and the grittiness and realness is what we loved about it. It was way ahead of its time and way better than Ballers ever was.

They tackled topics like domestic violence, paternity suits and settlements, drug use, steroid use, off the field drama, gay players WAY before that was a mainstream topic, head trauma and injury culture, coach-player interactions, the business side of the game… it was just so ahead of its time

The two people that hated this show the most were Eagles owner Jeffrey Laurie and then commissioner Paul Tagliabue... they claimed the storylines were outlandish and unrealistic but EVERY subject covered has really happened since the cancelation of Playmakers💯😂😂

This show actually reminds me of an Xbox game that came out in 2005 called “Blitz: The League” that revolved around all this type of stuff. Lawrence Taylor played a major role in that game and I’m sure provided a lot of juicy insight to the game makers.

Thank you for posting the video. The TV show "Playmakers" talked about issues that are still going on today.

I remember thinking it was crazy that a pro athlete could be an addict. I had so much to learn...

This show was better suited for FX. It could have had a longer run on FX.

I just watched the first episode. You an add Korey Stringer dying from heat stroke during practice to something that hit too close to home for the NFL.

The TV show "Playmakers" is a program that still leaves an impression on me.
ESPN let the NFL punk them, but they didnt want to lose that NFL TV contract. This show looking like a prophet now. All the issues discussed in this show eventually rocked the NFL. This show could have ran several seasons. They was even going to do a basketball spinoff of this.

Problem is no other network would pick the show up either because pretty much all the other cable networks are owned by one of the big four broadcast and none of them wanted to piss the NFL off either

They hated Jesus because he told the truth

Edit: All these people in the replies that completely missed the point of this comment make my day.

The NFL didn't like the movie any given Sunday as well. Anything that shows what players actually go through the NFL does not like they hate that movie the program

I knew this was out there. I heard about Playmakers and poof! It disappeared instantly and no one ever seemed to have heard of it all the sudden

These athletes are humans, but owners see money and fans see players. They have been trained to believe they are nothing without the sport.

The addiction to prescription drugs is a reference to Brett Favre.

What a show, and it is true that the NFL threatened BSPN, which is why it was taken off the air. This was Ballers before Ballers.

This show had to potential to be an all time great. Another network should've picked up the second season. Excellent video!

I thought hbo would have picked it up. The nfl had power over ESPN so you can understand why EsPn pulled the show. But HBO “inside the nfl” pushed the nfl buttons for many years with controversial stories. The nfl did nothing.
