iPhone X vs. iPhone 8 Plus Comparison Smackdown

I have the iPhone X now since launch day and gonna return it tomorrow for the 8 plus. Things that I didn’t like were when I prop the phone to watch videos and it locks, I have to tap and rotate my head sideways for Face ID to work, it doesn’t work in landscape mode. I also play Pokémon go and other games that I need to launch multitask and swipe up to quit the app and this tap and hold to quit an app is extremely annoying. Also when I watch movies on Netflix the screen is dark even when brightness is all turned up. I need the convenience of tapping the home button and the phone opening instantly. I was willing to live with the color shift and imminent burn in but the swipe gestures and Face ID was just not selling it. Comparing my current 6S it just feels like a longer narrower version of it.

swipe up makes faceID pointless because you still have to touch the exact same spot to open the phone...

8 plus is amazing! The resolution is incredible, I’ve been watching movies on my phone more than on TV and the games look incredible, I don’t even play games but the screen looks so good I’ve been binge playing games for 3 days straight!

Guys trust me it’s not worth the upgrade, iPhone 8 Plus is best, Face ID is ok but the home button rocks
Both cameras have IS in iPhone X thats good but still iPhone 8 Plus looks really cool I might sell my iPhone X 64 gig and get iPhone 8 Plus 256gig if someone agrees plz like this comment so I am sure

I dont think the price is a big deal, all decent smartphones are near 1K, its a ultra premium phone and almost anyone who buys this will put it on a device payment plan vs paying all upfront.

I upgraded from the iPhone 6 s plus to the I phone 10 and it fits in my pocket so much better and it is easier for me to use with one hand it is so much faster I’m sticking with it the notch doesn’t bother me

The 8 Plus is $800, not $850, so the difference is $200 or a full 25%. That's more than $8 a month for a 24 month payment plan. So with better battery life, more useable screen area (with no burn in worries) and keeping the trusty touch ID, I'm OK with declining the X for this generation and letting everyone else do the beta testing. The 8 Plus is a better bargain and quite possibly the better phone.

The one major dealbreaker for me when it comes to the X is that coming from an iPhone 7 Plus, it's really hard having to "downgrade" back to a smaller screen when I'm playing games or watching videos. Sure, the screen is taller but because of aspect ratio, the full screen is not being used when watching videos, you get these two black bars on the sides, almost like having bezels which kills the experience. I've been using it since launch and I don't know what to do. On the other hand, I really love the tap to wake feature plus oled screen is so nice to look at. Wireless charging is so convenient, why couldn't apple just have made a bigger iPhone X? I don't even care if I have to pay an extra $100-$200 at this point.

A lot of people (including reviewers... ugh) seem to hate that extra step of swiping up after FaceID unlocks but they're missing the point of this step. There's a reason for this extra step. What if you just want to look at the lock screen notifications or just check the time? It's important for the phone to unlock only when you want it to.

Anyway other than the above point I loved your review. You distinguish yourself from all the other fancy, flashy tech YouTubers very well because you put things across in a no-nonsense way. I like that. :)

Is it just me, or do the colors on the 8+ screen look better?

The one thing that made me pick the 8+ above the X is the split screen view in apps like mail and calendar in landscape. It just makes you so much more productive. It’s also nice that the home screen has a landscape mode. Makes it feel more like a small iPad than an iPhone.

Hey Lisa, I watch your videos all the time, so first things, I appreciate you for doing what you do. I understand where you’re coming from when you said apple could make it so that when you look at it, it just takes you to main screen instead of having to swipe up... To me, one of the coolest things the X does is with the notifications on the lock screen. When you get a message, it tells you who texted you but it just says iMessage under the name, or with YouTube, it just says notification when someone else is looking at your phone. Once “YOU” look at it, it reveals the text message, so other people can’t be nosey and see what other people are saying to you until “YOU” look at it. A very welcome feature to me. You wouldn’t be able to see that if FaceID took you straight to main screen without also having to swipe up.
