Vice President Kamala Harris assailed Donald Trump at her first campaign rally since replacing President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate. At West Allis Central High School in Milwaukee, Harris told a cheering crowd that she knew "Donald Trump's type" and pledged to put her record as a prosecutor against him "any day of the week."

Wisconsin, a crucial battleground state in the Nov. 5 election, saw Harris taking a marginal lead over Trump in a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll. Harris led Trump 44% to 42% among registered voters in the national poll conducted after Biden dropped out of the contest on Sunday and endorsed Harris. Previous surveys found Harris and Trump tied at 44% a week ago and Trump ahead by a percentage point at the beginning of the month.

The poll results, within a 3-point margin of error, suggest some limited movement in Democrats' direction. Harris' elevation to the top of the ticket may have blunted Trump's momentum from the Republican National Convention. Harris swiftly consolidated her party's support after Biden, 81, abandoned his reelection campaign under pressure from party members concerned about his ability to beat Trump or serve another four-year term.
