Make an easy and simple lined canvas tote bag with this step-by-step beginner sewing tutorial. This is part of the Learn to Sew series featuring the Brother CS7000i, a basic entry-level sewing machine. This project can be completed in one full day, from cutting out fabric to taking your new bag out for the night.
Fabric Requirements + Materials:
Solid canvas (Cotton Duck Blush 6 oz)
Print canvas (Cotton + Steel Rifle Paper Co. English Garden Juliet Rose Canvas Navy 6 oz)
- Main Printed Panels (cut 2) - 21 x 15.5 inches
- Solid Accent Strips (cut 2) - 21 x 4.5 inches
- Solid Lining Pieces (cut 2) - 21 x 19 inches
- Solid Pocket Piece (cut 1) - 21 x 13.5 inches
- Double Fold Bias Tape - 21 inches - can use any width, mine was about 3/8 inches
- One Inch Cotton Webbing (2 yards)
Fusible woven interfacing (Pellon SF101)
- (cut 2) 20 x 14.5 inches - apply to Main Printed Panels
- (cut 2) 20 x 3.5 inches - apply to Solid Accent Strips
Coordinating thread (I used 50 wt & 12 wt cotton thread)
Finished tote bag is approximately 15.5 inches tall / 19 inches wide

Magic Pins - Patchwork Extra Fine
Squeeze Bottle for Glue Basting - 2 oz.
Superior Threads Topstitch Needles - 80/12, 90/14, 100/16
Quilted with Aurifil Cotton 12 wt Thread
Pellon SF101 Shape Flex Fusible Woven Interfacing
Creative Grids quilting rulers

Great tip on basting with glue and also gluing the bias tape on the pocket. Such a good video! Recommend for anyone wanting to sew a bag.

Great tutorial! Only thing missing was some shots of where you were sewing on the bag (shot of the entire bag), but I was able to figure it out since I've made many bags before. LOVE that you added measurements, stitch lengths and even needle and thread size. It's really helpful for beginners! Thanks for your time in making this great video!

Can you please please do a tutorial on figuring out the math formula for making totes. For example if I want to make a custom purse or tote a certain height and width. This is the hardest thing to find on YouTube. For example how the math changes the height and width of the purse based on how large you make the Box bottom. Thank you so much
