Being a PhD student is a unique journey filled with challenges and opportunities. Throughout my own PhD life, I've discovered that time management for students is a crucial skill that can make a significant difference in how successful you are. It's not just about working hard; it's about working smart and knowing how to be productive even when faced with a heavy workload.

One of the key aspects we'll discuss is the importance of a disciplined schedule. Maintaining a routine might sound simple, but it's incredibly effective in keeping you on track. I'll share some practical tips on how to create and stick to a schedule that maximizes your efficiency and productivity. This is essential for any PhD student life, as balancing research, coursework, and personal time can be quite demanding.

We'll also explore various techniques for how to be more productive. This includes setting realistic goals, breaking tasks into manageable chunks, and using tools and apps designed to enhance productivity. Additionally, I'll talk about the importance of taking breaks and ensuring you have time for relaxation and self-care, which are vital for maintaining high levels of productivity over the long term.

Motivation for PhD research can sometimes wane, especially during tough times. I'll share some strategies to stay motivated, such as finding a support system, celebrating small victories, and reminding yourself of your long-term goals. Staying motivated is key to pushing through difficult periods and achieving success.

Throughout this video, I'll provide insights into my own experiences and those of other successful scholars, giving you a well-rounded perspective on what it takes to excel in your PhD journey. By the end, you'll have a better understanding of how to manage your time effectively, stay motivated, and maintain a disciplined schedule, ultimately helping you to be more productive and successful in your PhD life. Procrastination? Today, I was supposed to write some results about my experiments. Instead, I went outside for a walk and came across a protest. I took out my phone and started interviewing people, asking them what they were protesting for. Then I recorded myself analyzing the protest, edited the video, and sent it to YouTube channels to promote it. Of course, I spent the whole day on that. I had never done that before. I am studying for a master's degree in engineering, and I think I probably just didn't want to write :C

Loved your words on this topic! Can you please make a video on how to survive through rough days in research? When nothing works even when you are doing literally everything to make it work.

I had 5 manuscripts in my PhD thesis within 3 years. Actually, I needed only 3 manuscripts for graduation. One of the paper, I sent to Nature communications when I submitted my PhD thesis. My supervisor said to me that you are the most productive student in my lab over 30 years of his career. It is true that I only focused on those three things you mention in the beginning of my PhD. I run multiple projects at the same time and only focused on getting and analyzing results throughout my PhD.

Maybe I'm going to start growing my beards to plan how to brush them 5 hours daily.

Reading papers is a must. Be very selective though.

This sounds very similar to the concept of small and big rocks taught by Franklin-Covey. Good reminder!

@Someonefromearth123 Thank you so much for your response. From my understanding and experience, so many things about academic writing/publication are either not taught or not well taught in higher education. I so much appreciate your reply.

I've heard this 5 minute rule a lot. It does not work 6:21 After 10-15 minutes I'm bored again. What do you recommend?

Dr. Stapleton, what advice do you have for someone that thinks they have to read all the literature [gray and peer-reviewed & published wherher Q1, Q2, etc] on a topic? The person enjoys it yet it is a distraction for them. And they can seem to be able to help themselves as it is somewhat "enjoyable".

Hi Andy,

I'm an undergraduate studying AI in Vietnam, and I'm about to start some small research under the guidance of my professor. As I'm new to the field of research, could you please provide some advice on how to begin my journey? I would greatly appreciate any tips or guidance you can offer.

Thank you!
