Two years ago when my wife and I were looking at 5th wheels/ RV’s, we were surprised at how many young couples with babies, toddlers, young kids were out on the lots looking AND buying! We were then told it was a C-19 trend. Yet my wife and I, in our mid 60’s, were looking to buy because of retirement. After about our 5th or 6th stop at various RV dealerships, we ran across a older gentleman that had been in the business some 40+ years. When I asked him about the craziness of this C-19 trend he stated the following; If you don’t need to buy, DON’T buy!! He said the market is way out of wack and that most of the buyers are going to have buyers remorse in 3-6 months when they have to keep paying on the RV, Ins. on the RV, storage costs on the RV, Maintenance on the lack of use condition on the RV, the cost and time each RV trip costs whether near or far, etc, etc….. He then told us to wait for 2-3 years (2022-2023) and there will be bargains galore! Well he turned out to be spot on

I felt this wave coming since Spring and held off buying and I have cash. No one was willing to budge off price in the past year, and private owners were asking retail for used. I'll wait for the fire sale.

We were looking to get a bigger camper last year and almost traded ours in on a used one. It had been a few years since we looked at campers and we were shocked at how much the prices had gone up. They were asking prices that were so crazy high, just a few years before you could have bought a single wide trailer house for the same money. The dealer offered us a great deal with ours as a trade in and we were literally about to sign papers when we realized they had raised the price by over 10 grand! And they couldn’t figure out why we refused to sign and walked away. I am SO thankful we kept ours and didn’t trade.

Assuming you're a legally competent adult it's 100% on you for getting yourself under water on a loan. We're not talking fraud here, we're talking about folks not doing their homework and buying a depreciating asset at peak values. I bought a new trailer in December of 2020, after doing a years worth of research, checking historical values, resale values, walking through dozens of units and walking away from about as many dealerships when I couldn't get a reasonable deal done. 2 years later and I've got more sitting in my savings account with my credit union than I owe on the thing so I've got little to worry about in the next 3 years until my loan is clear.

We kept ours (pre covid purchase) and payed it off because of the poor quality build horror stories we were reading during covid. Thought about trading but quickly changed our minds. Thanks for all the great information you have provided us AW!

Always be willing to walk away, from either a dealer or a private seller.
Take your time and do your homework!
You will be glad you did!

While the dealers in many cases have acted unethically, the consumer signing their name is ultimately at fault. Doesn’t matter if it is a loan for tuition, cars or RV’s they are promising / pledging to pay the loan payments on time until satisfied. It is ultimately up to them to know what they are signing. If they don’t understand, come back with someone that can help them. The issue we’ve gotten into is that the victim excuse is attractive and leads people not to do their homework. Sad in my opinion, but that is the way I see it.

My husband and I have been waiting for prices to get back to normal. I think people just want something and don’t know how to wait even when they knew they were paying MSRP. It’s always better not to impulse buy.

Yeah, so I purchased Truck camper from Cheyenne camping center (Was listed on e-bay). New unit (201). Palomino ss1251 I think is the model number. What they did not do was prep the camper properly, it leaked water from the City water connection, and never bothered to tell us about the drivers side problem with the pop-up which leaked water and was damaged from the get go, but you never look for those kinds of things when its "new". I beleive they knew the problems and simply passed it on to us. Very disapointed in this unit made by Palomino and sold to us "as new" from Cheyenne. I think it was new, just had "undisclosed" problems. Just beware.

For every seller there is a sucker! It's 100% on the consumer to be educated and purchase within their means.

I was lucky enough to buy my used 2016 RV three years ago for $50, 000 cash after selling my home. Current market value is $60, 000 even though it’s 3 years older now. We’ve all heard the horror stories of brand new RV’s driving off the lot and things falling apart. Buying a used RV that has already had its kinks worked out and has been well maintained is probably your best bet.

I bought our 26 ft. Class C Gulf Stream 6256 Conquest in 2016 for $39k and it was 4 years old at that time. New to motorhome camping, there was no way I was going to invest the money it takes to buy a new coach, when I was not sure if we would even like it. So now it has been paid off for several years and we have learned a lot about the unit and thoroughly enjoyed motorhome camping over the past 7 seasons -- despite the recent CV19 insanity. Now, we are approaching the point where we will need to make the decision to either upgrade our unit to something newer or simply get rid of it. A lot depends on where the RV market is at that and patiently waiting....I will buy used again without hesitation, but not from a dealer.

I like how you both speak plain and clear english.👍
Ultimately the buck stops with the buyer.

Hello wingman, it is always the buyers responsibility to know what and exactly how much they are paying for a product or service before giving up their hard earned money, remember it is your money and there is always more to choose from. I am probably a little different as it takes me 6 months of research and haggling to buy a TV! let alone a car, truck or RV. But once again remember there is always an alternative and more times then not a better deal!

For all the Hotel and Motel commitments. Try having a campfire there or watching the sun rise at your doorstep. Rving takes effort. It's worth it. And we still use Hotels when traveling.

The buyers are responsible for doing their homework. There are plenty of YouTube videos and websites to get yourself educated on about anything you want to buy. The problem is we live in a "want it now" society. You can order something now and get it today or the next day. If it takes a week we get impatient and will pay for expedited shipping so we can have the item tomorrow. The RV salesman knows this attitude is quite common in todays society and prey on customers to get the deal done quick so they do not know they have been screwed until they go to sell, trade it in or it falls apart in their driveway when they get it home. The salesman will know in a couple of minutes if you know anything about buying an RV or the RV life style.
It pays to take your time and thoroughly research any major purchase. This will keep you from getting taken advantage of 99% of the time and can put you in a stronger negotiating position.

Wow, what an interesting video. I’m not in the RV market but this is definitely a bell weather for the rest of our economy. Great content!

We looked for 3 years. Winded up not buying one waiting for the crash. After all they hype with lots and parking, we changing and went with yacht. Better choice.
