A Needle in a Haystack | Canyons, Vents, and Seeps of the Chile Margin

Sometimes, the path to discovery is littered with things not found. Previous, albeit limited, exploration along the Chile Margin revealed the chemical signature of hydrothermal vents in the water column. Until now, no one had looked for those vents with advanced tools. The #ChileMargin2024 science team took advantage of the state-of-the-art resources available on R/V Falkor (too); they went where all signs pointed to vents and found no vents. “It’s not that we didn’t find it; it is that it is not there,” said Co-Chief Scientist Patricia Esquete. There was a heat signature ten years ago, and now there is not. To Esquete, the lack of findings offers proof of the dynamic nature of vents.
