ZED

ZED is the story of an aging artist, lost in regret, and the haze of dementia. Inside the dreamscape of his creative mind, now come undone, players reassemble the artist’s fragmented memories into a final, lasting legacy: a loving final gift to his unborn granddaughter.

Scheduled for release in early 2019 for VR and PC, ZED was created by Eagre Games and will be published by Cyan Ventures.

At first, I thought, wow a new Cyan game! Then I saw the trailer and thought it was too familiar. Then I saw that this is actually a published game instead of a developed one and it now makes sense. Good to see that Cyan is confident in its financial situation to fund other peoples games. I heard rumors that the team didn't even have enough money for its own.

Cyan Ventures doesn't seem to be a complete renaming of Cyan, guys, just a small new subset of Cyan [that handles publishing for Cyan themselves and for third-party studios] and Eagre Games is the first studio that is using that service, mainly due to Chuck Carter as the connection between Cyan and Eagre. [Chuck worked on the original Myst back in the day, and modeled several of the ages in it, before leaving for other studios.] As for the complaints about this being a walking simulator... we'll see, but the indications we've gotten from Chuck so far suggest that Zed has some puzzles in it but that they're probably sparse - i.e. not packed densely into the world. The line between walking simulator and actual puzzle/adventure game has gotten somewhat hazy lately due to some adventure game-walking sim hybrids with minimal or really easy puzzles. I suspect Zed's somewhere in that gray area. I'm not really worried at this point, and I figure that Cyan's getting a cut of Zed's sales as publisher, which would maybe allow them to keep operating, maybe scrape together enough to complete Firmament? We'll see.

Premise reminds me of the final chapter of the King's Quest reboot but even more surreal. Nice.

As much as I would love a real Riven (or even one in 24bit non-dithered images), it's good to see new projects are being funded.

(I would still like the StarryExpanse project given support, if any, for example the meshes, pretty much everything else would be too low resolution, unfortunately)

Wait - what's this? It's Cyan, but it's also somebody else. The world looks very Cyan, but also comics? Have to rewatch; as usual Cyan is very mysterious and multi-layered. Zed, eh? Looks promising. Comes out in early 2019? Great. It's almost done then. Where do I go for more information? Cyan's page is 404. Humm. Google it. There's a Kickstarter. Humm, what's this? Estimated delivery 2017. Wait, what? Looks like it made its goal. But maybe its goal wasn't enough. So perhaps Cyan is helping them finish it. Hopefully they can fulfill their kickstarter pledges. Definitely should push an update to their backers telling them what happened, and where things are going. So . . . when can I order it, and for how much?
