I learn a lot from your uploads. Lesson #1 don't buy anything with a ford 5.4 3V in it.

These engines already have enough problems, not changing your oil regularly will only make these problems worse

Had one of these a month ago or so. The customer is religious on maintainance. Everything was clean. Lobe was wiped, roller chewed up and adjuster was cracked. Only thing I conclude was the adjuster cracked and stopped feeding oil to that lobe.

Can't totally blame that one on the 5.4L problems when this one was not taken care of. Did they ever change the oil

so what would you recommend to clean out all that sludge, seems like the new parts will gum up again?

How many of those hoses crumbled into dust when removed, or were just sitting in there waiting to explode?

I stumbled upon this video from watching another video of you pointing out a $4 follower destroying an engine in a navigator. I have a 2010 navigator that has been making some sound from the passenger side. I thought it was a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. However, when watching this video and hearing the sound, it really sounds the same as what I have.

Just like mine did! miles and no sludge though. I wish all the mechanics on you tube would mention the costs involved when you do these repairs. When I got done repairing the cam and followers and adjusters on. one side it cost just under 1000 dollars using Ford dealer parts. cam 350, followers one side 250, adjusters 250 one side, valve cover gasket 50, miscellaneous 100 or so.

Another fine example of what happens when you extend or skip scheduled maintenance. It's a lot cheaper to regularly change your oil then to replace worn out parts.

I've subcribed to your YouTube channel as I've been looking at buying a 05 or 07 f150 with the 5.4. I've been putting together a list of common repairs and things to look for. Thanks for the help.!

Thanks for the video. Can you access the followers by only taking off the valve cover? I bought a tool that holds the roller in place when you remove the follower.

If you pull a 5.4 3V down this far be prepared for a special tool to reinstall the timing chains and one chance to get it right.

First I like to say that your videos are great and it helps "do it yourselfers" a lot. I learned a lot about the ford 3v and the how vvti systems, so thanks to you my friend. I have 2 questions, I helped a friend who had similar problems and I suggested we replace the lash adjusters and roller followers. He bought the Melling brand lash adjusters and the were rock hard new out of the box no plunging or spring activity what so ever. Is this normal or a defective part (all 24 were like this)? Also is there a trick to replacing them without removing the cams? Thanks....

Have a 2000 f series with a 4.6 liter with about 120, 000 miles on it. I parked it and let it sit and barely drove it (stupid mistake). When I fired it up one day it backfired and ran rough. Came to find that it spit out about 5 roller followers on the pass side. Have yet to put them back in, but fear I may have bent valves. I guess I'll find out when I get into it further.

I can't get clarification on this issue of motor oil. I have seen so many opinions in regards to this, most feel that the factory spec of 5w20 is the proper avenue, others with the opinion of thicker oil = better protection. The videos that Brian M makes can really get you worrying about it, that's for sure. Don't want to put words in his mouth, but, I thought I recalled him recommending 5w30 to protect the can phasers and help oil pressures at idle during hot weather. Anyone else weighing in on this?

I just watched another video of yours and you had a special tool to keep the springs down to pull out the roller follower. Is it easier to just take the cam out and do you have a video where you replace the lash adjuster?
