YouTube Told Us!... The Official Word on the 3 Minute Short Rollout

On October 15, creators were eager to get going and upload 3 minute Shorts - but there was confusion because they didn't appear as Shorts, anywhere! In this video, I show you where YouTube gave us a "heads up", but we all missed the memo! We were also given YouTube's official timeline for the longer Shorts rollout!

What a messy rollout, hopefully this is fixed by next week. YouTube could’ve done better here.

This is really frustrating. I had the impression that on October 15th everything would be good to go, but in reality it's not until late 2024/early 2025 that the feature REALLY is in effect.

Huge fail in communication by YouTube, I'm just gonna wait until then to upload shorts longer than 60 seconds. Thank you for the amazing videos!

This isn't on the creators or viewers for missing the nuance in the original announcement. Why not say it explicitly like the update Rene gave yesterday from the beginning? Now there are a bunch of >1 minute vertical videos flooding recommendations and creators still confused what to do if they want to upload longer shorts. I love YouTube, but this was nothing less than a misfire.

I won't be uploading any until the rollout is official. I'm not trying to mess up my data with a video that starts out as a regular video then changes to Short. I've been checking it daily and so far it's still not working when you upload it as a Short.

Some people are having a massive revenue drop with videos from 1-2 minutes who are not supposed to be shorts. How can we avoid this? This is terrible...

Thank you for the information. I do watch the creator insider channel often and I totally missed that point when she said that the long shorts will still be treated as videos for now…

When I first started out on YT there was a 3 minute limit. Does this mean that all of my old videos, three minutes or less, will now appear on the short shelf?

I'd be curious to know if other shorts based creators are taking a bath in terms of dropped viewership right now. I've been averaging 5-6k an hour for a month or so and now I'm down to like...1-2 k which is low, even during luls.
