There are growing fears that Syria stands on the edge of a return to widespread violence after days of sectarian bloodshed.

A human rights group estimates it has killed at least 1,000 people in the city of Latakia.

The country’s leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has appealed for unity during the worst period of unrest since he took control last December.

He has also vowed to hold anyone involved in harming civilians accountable, after days of clashes where Syrian security forces allegedly killed hundreds of civilians from the Alawite religious minority.

Amid the fighting, hundreds of civilians living along the Mediterranean coast have fled their homes.

The Alawites are very moderate Muslims who does not speak about religion outside their homes. They are very well educated and peaceful people. They have lived in peace with Christians, druz and Armenians. Recent local reports indicate that over 5, 000 people have been killed in the Alawite region of Syria's coast due to an ethical cleaning strategy led by many of the branches inside the new Syrian forces. The violence has led to mass evacuations of Alawites and Christians, with some seeking refuge at a Russian military base. Thousands of people are still in the mountains afraid from getting back to their homes. The jihadists burned houses, schools, supermarkets and cars. They stole people's houses as well.
Our families, including my family who are doctors and engineers, are in extreme danger. Please share the actual information about the terrorists who are governing our country. I will never trust a former leader of AL-nusra and ISIS if he wears a suit.

There are enormous numbers of victims and only people killed because they are from an Alawite community who have been subjected to bullets and bombs and all kinds of weapons and violence in our region killing Men and girls and boys and stealing and burning their homes. We demand international protection for the Alawi minorities. I hope to hear our voice. We don't know if our role will come in death, but we don't want to be silent about injustice and ethnic extermination.
