Warning Signs in Dengue | Dr. Vivek Bhargava

Показать описание
Dengue is a viral infection caused by the Aedes mosquito, and it is prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. The infection spreads when an infected mosquito bites a person, and the virus is then transmitted to others through subsequent mosquito bites. The mosquitoes responsible for the spread of dengue, as well as chikungunya and Zika, are most active during the day and night, particularly around dawn and dusk.
In this important video, Dr. Vivek Bhargava, Senior Consultant in Critical Care Medicine at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur, discusses the warning signs of dengue, its causes, and how to identify severe symptoms that require urgent medical attention. Understanding these warning signs can help you seek timely care and avoid complications.
What is Dengue?
Dengue is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes breed in stagnant water found in containers like buckets, bowls, flowerpots, and even discarded tires. When an infected mosquito bites a person, the virus enters the bloodstream, and symptoms of dengue typically develop after 4 to 10 days.
Warning Signs of Dengue
High fever: Sudden onset of a high fever (typically above 104°F or 40°C)
Severe headache: Intense pain, particularly in the forehead region
Pain behind the eyes: A deep, aching pain that worsens with eye movement
Joint and muscle pain: Often referred to as ""breakbone fever"" due to the severity of muscle and joint pain
Rash: Skin rashes may appear within a few days of fever onset
Fatigue and weakness: Extreme tiredness and exhaustion
Nausea and vomiting: May accompany the fever, causing discomfort and dehydration
Bleeding: Nosebleeds, gum bleeding, or easy bruising are serious signs of severe dengue, which may indicate the risk of bleeding or shock.
Why are Warning Signs Important?
While dengue is often self-limiting, severe dengue can cause serious complications like dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. Early identification of warning signs is crucial for timely medical intervention, preventing complications such as internal bleeding, organ failure, and even death.
Prevention and Control
Eliminate breeding sites: Prevent mosquitoes from breeding by emptying containers that hold stagnant water.
Use mosquito repellents: Apply repellent on exposed skin and wear long-sleeved clothing to protect against bites.
Mosquito nets: Use nets to prevent mosquito bites, especially when sleeping.
Community efforts: Participate in community-wide initiatives to reduce mosquito populations.
Treatment for Dengue
Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue. Treatment mainly focuses on:
Hydration: To prevent dehydration due to fever and vomiting
Pain relief: Medications such as acetaminophen can help alleviate pain and fever
Monitoring: Close monitoring for signs of severe dengue, particularly in high-risk groups such as children, the elderly, or those with pre-existing medical conditions
If you or someone you know experiences any of the warning signs of dengue, it is important to seek immediate medical attention.
