This takes me back when I was a compressor service engineer back in the 1980s at ."Compair " when They stated useing IGBT'S Inverters on there 150kw compressors the (V F D )variable frequency drive .was used to create Pulse-Width Modulation . there were six IGBTS injecting Switched DC the IGBTs pulsing voltage up to 15, 000 times per second .the motor would ramp up slowly to full output. And if you didn't set the carrier frequency right the motor screamed like a stuck pig . It was a Long time ago lol .

First I heard of these was a few years ago they are used in the YSUS board on my Panasonic VT30 plasma tv, there was about 6 of them from memory, the whole lot shorted and had to be replaced, as well as a few other parts

It looks like the IGBT has a pretty decent linear range. Ordinary bipolar transistors (generally silicon) are used in audio amps -- how much wider is their linear range? In any case, it looks like the IGBT transistor you used is aimed at high-voltage power applications, and not audio.

It might be interesting to see the gate driven by a swept voltage (i.e., a sawtooth from 0 v to 12 v peak), and comparing the input and output waveforms on a 'scope.

I've never seen one physically. I only known them because of my textbooks but they can sure handle very demanding loads. I hear that they are used in electric cars.

So, the threshold voltage for IGBT is approximately 5.7v, I wonder in what voltage it would go into saturation region 🧐
