Baptism is from the Greek word "baptizo" which means to completely immerse in.
It's a form of ritual cleansing different from what the levites performed by either sprinkling or washing of feet and hand etc. John the Baptist who was a levite was the first to introduce this form of cleansing hence why he was called "John the Baptist". He heralded the ministry of Christ and this new way of cleansing which was to continue.
Baptism doesn't remove original sin, only Jesus was qualified to pay for Sin because he knew no sin. It was a perfect sacrifice and substitution.
Baptism is done after one accepts the salvation that only Jesus gives by believing he died for him and rose again and confessing Him as Lord of life.
Baptism is an open declaration of Jesus as your Lord and identification with his death, burial and resurrection (hence why you are immersed in and brought out of water). It's signifies a final separation from the world just as the Israelites were completely separated from Egypt after they crossed the red sea but first they had to be covered in the God's pillar of cloud/fire which both protected them and gave them their own atmosphere.
Likewise you must be born again first before baptism so that you will be in Christ. If any man be in Christ...he is a new creature. In Him (Christ), we live and move and have our being.
