Whatever the circumstances of this conflict, you have to admire the bravery and discipline of BOTH sides.

My dad took me to see this movie at the theatre at Eastwood in western Sydney back in the day, 64 or 65 whenever it was shown lol. Was amazing to see it on the big screen, have never forgotten it 😉

2:08, this actor accurately portrays a sergeant of the British military in the 19th Century!

the thing about this movie, they had so many limitations to what they could show, yet they were able stretch many of them. Not truly accurate but a fantastic representation for the time. Great movie, filmed western style.

Just a reminder to all of you fans of Zulu! The 60th anniversary of its premiere is coming up, JANUARY 22, 2024. I hope SOMEONE in the British film industry is strong enough to hold a major showing to celebrate the movies contribution to modern cinema. To ignore this movie is to ignore its influence on all sorts of modern movies made since.

Another battle of logistics --- by the Zulu withdrawal the infantry was down to 900 rounds. The cavalry had fled after exhausting their carbine shells. And the Zulu had been in the field for over 48 hours without food or water after reaching their original rally point to start the campaign. And some of them had six day marches to get home.

The last battle scenes, from 05:55 onward, are scenes from bloody Hell.

WAR IS HELL. So is peace. Some survive war, but none peace.

The Sergeant Major has the best bayonette fundamentals. He bloody well hadn't forgotten them. "On parade" I say

The character 'hook' who is portrayed as a thief and not as the historical 'good man' who hookie was adds depth, to the character because despite his flaws and his rivalry with the corporal (who sent a letter to his wife), nevertheless he forgives him and goes out to help him! This makes the scene more interesting as there is a kind of 'repentance' involved reminding us of the thief on the cross who last minute repented in same way 'hookie' changes his mind to save the corporal as he sacrificially puts his own life in danger for someone, he doesn't really like much. This is the kind of love that is emphasised in the Bible. This is why the movie is glorious!

Stanley Baker's name does not appear on the Blu-Ray 50th Anniversary box, just Michael Caine. Funny that the leading star and co-producer of the movie is no longer worthy of a top line credit. So the guy died young, he still is owed the credit. If I was his heirs I would filing a complaint with the British Film Board. Stanley is one of the big reasons this movie got made.
