Chengdu 's dark sky is not related to smog in fact. that the city is surrounded by mountainous, the local climate is quite inherent and the moisture in the air is quite high always, it could be better in the fall and winter. have a nice time in China. and welcome to Guangzhou someday.

As for blue sky, there is indeed pollution out there in the air and its quite a thing but also it is because is in the Sichuan Basin, where the climate is famous in china to be like always very foggy and grey, so that's also part of the reason.

Forgive me for justifying this. Sichuan, the province, is a lowland surrounded by moutians. Due to its geographical characteristic, it is famous for cloudy day. So most of time, what you see in Chengdu is actually fog and clouds. Smog could be there in fall and winter, which can be measured by PM2.5, but mostly just in winter.

The 'smog' could actually be the 'mists' especially f there's no smog smell... seeing that China is a mountainous country everywhere.
