Very good performance. Voices and orchestra are in perfect balance. This is, for me, the correct way to conducting the Puccini's masterpiece. I'm italian, and proud to be born in the country of this great composer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting! The local station I was listening to had a MONO feed so the broadcast sounded flat and uninteresting. The Stereo feed here makes all the difference!

Wow! I'm sorry to miss hearing this live but this recording is thrilling nonetheless. I agree with amerchesi that this is a Turandot where the singers and orchestra are in perfect balance indeed. This performance brought to mind some CDs I have that are so compelling, like the Karajan/Behrens Salome, that once I hit play, it's impossible for me not to finish listening to the end.

Pankratova is far from the great Turandots before her.
A bit of wobble and stridency because of the too much effort it takes.

Elena does notable work here but the tenor‘s comparatively lyric voice has not the timbre or powerful sonority, IMO, for this role. A Nemorino instrument for Calif will simply not do. After some 50 years Corelli is still the champion, although Bonisolli certainly had his moments in the role but despite his awesome way with the high range in the role, he was far more indulgent & stylistically primitive than is suitable for this character. Are there any really first class Calif‘s around these days? If the MET cannot find one where might there be one?
