so in the movie it clearly shows that IOI is trying to get control of the Oasis so they can sell the customer's HUD space to advertisements, a huge amount of it, just enough that the players don't have seizures, just to make more money then the "trillions" they already make. No player wants the majority of their view to be constant ads. anyone can get a key and when they do they get a score based on what order they got it and how many keys they have, it's basically just to inform everyone who is closest to getting all the keys. I'm also pretty sure that your avatar stays in the game for like a minute after you take off the headset so people can't just take it off to save themselves.
