I'm looking at test shots of Ilford's HP5+ in 7 different film developers:
D-76
Xtol
FX-39
Tmax
Rodinal / Adonal
HC-110
Adox's Atomal 49

This is all using resources available at:

Fascinating, thanks for sharing that comparison.

Wonderful comparison! It’s more expensive than most options, but I’ve landed on DD-X for HP5 at 800 as my favorite combination. DD-X pushes nicely and retains a nice balance between sharpness and graininess. I don’t have much empirical data to back anything up, but this is just my experience and observations.

___ Thank you Dan for your extensive testing ! I cannot speak for HP5 as I use primarily Tri-X... Also, I print on Leica V35 enlarger (no scanner at home)... My finding are that Tri-x exposed at 250, in Rodinal 1+35 for 10 minutes 30 sec, agitation of 10 sec every 90 sec, has a "je ne sais quoi" of a "magic " feel specially in strong sunlight! ___ I also use FX 39 at 250 asa(1+9 for 11.30sc, agitation as above) delivers a very precise and "pointilliste" grain which could suit some subject... FX 39 is the "sistership" of the much appreciatted in Europe (and now discobtinued Tetenal Neofin Red) ... it works wonders on TMX 3200 ! ... Finally, D76 has that classical feel that is appreciated worldwide by photojournalist... surprisingly Eugene Smith preferred at 2+1 ratio (for his Minamata images) and so did Paul Fusco (at 500asa).... as for Avedon, his 120 and larger format images are all going through HC110... Voilà for today. Bye

Thank you for this comparison but, I am wondering why you did not try Ilford DD as it would be a natural, no?

thank you for sharing. It's useful. I'm not really sure what you mean with "low frequency sharpness" as sharpness to me it's something concenrning the highfrequencies, or better, the higher tonality variations in a smaller area. So I don't understand how you can have sharpness in higher freqs but not in the lower. ( are we taling about spacial frequency or lightwave frequency = colour? )Anyway I appreciate the test.

What dilutions were all these at because that can also make a difference in the results?
