The Dragon v1 does have launch escape capabilities, it was mentioned that they will implement an abort program using it's thrusters to seperate the capsule. This was announced after the CRS-7 explosion.

Is the engine configuration for a Falcon 9 first stage that will attempt landing different than an older one that didn't? A few years ago I watched a Falcon 9 rollout and the engines were arranged in a 3*3 pattern. But now the engines are a flower-like pattern. Does anyone know why they changed this?
