"'cos that's what I KNOW". I think this is the key point here.

Fast food is not budget-friendly anymore

Cheap food from grocery stores such as beans, rice, bananas, etc will fill you up with proper nutrients for cheap

And get a 3 million dollar business from your father and then describe yourself as self made from reselling hotweels from garage sales.

Don’t eat junk food. You can eat healthily by buying food at Aldi or Walmart.

He makes it sound so easy. You have to factor in where to store it. If it requires shipping, posting on FB marketplace or eBay. Time costs, having a storefront, renting a spot to sell the goods etc.

“that’s what I know” is the key phrase in that advice. You really need to study, investigate, so you know what’s the real value on things that you may find in garage sales.

Key is “what you know”. Do that. Rinse and repeat.

Garage sale and turn into 10x is very hard, most of the stuff are worthless junk you will just waste your money on, you need to have broad knowledge of all the items and know their value and how quick they sell. It’s not enough to just look at eBay and see it’s going higher and buy, if it sits on eBay for 6 months you just lost your cash flow.

Also newbies don’t understand how expensive it is to sell on eBay, 14% fee is taken right off the bat, shipping also needs to be added - if you sell a $50 item and charge buyer $25 shipping no one will buy it, so size of item also matters. You will also get claims eventually, 1 in 50 or 100, that will be a complete write off.

There are a lot easier ways to make money, but he knows garage sale items so to him it’s a good business. My side hustle is taking ungraded trading cards, grade them, and sell for a profit that’s what I know….do what you know and love…

I would say take the flea market and swap meet route, not saying you cant score at garage sales. Flea markets and swaps are where its at.

Doing this 10 years ago was amazing because it was sort of niche. Now everyone is doing it.

It’s not easy. Takes an extreme amount of work. Honestly easier to work for 100k making 25$ an hour than flipping 10k too 100k in yard sales.

Maybe 20 years ago it was easier but now everyone has easy access tuu oh value

If you want to work very hard and spend all your time at garage sales with your ten grand garage sales are the way to go. Once in a blue moon you might even find something really good

This is actually true. Ive worked auctions for years as well. At thrift stores and garage sales 1 to 10 isnt actually uncommon.
