Grow your own garden if you can.   Use natural fertilizers.  I use my organic scraps in mine.  Or buy the organic ones.

the certification in canada is done before you begin farming, only some produce gets sent to be verified. the extra cost is because the farmer has to get it to market faster, due to spoilage, and because they receive far less quantity for the land space, as they are not forcing the crops to yield more with chemicals and take losses due to pest and animals. they do employ less workers, but the annual crop yields are low, and the grocery stores take only the best, charging you more for the luxury.

i just checked the PH toady, and we use labs to give accurate soil analysis.certification is expensive, and my crops are far from subsidised.( i am the only cricket farmer who is certified organic, for human consumption) we also grow medicinal plants. ( some costs are due to green house growing, lights and electricity, not to mention expensive filtration systems for water and air to keep microbes and GMO pollen from invading crops, as well as hand pollination of fruits and vegetables indoors)

The reason organic is more expensive (i believe, but may be wrong) is because they have to pay to ship all their produce to a testing facility then pay for it all to come back and still fill out stacks of paper work just to get the logo of organic( Farmageddon documentary [on Netflix]). Also non-organic is so cheap because they get subsidies from the government.(Micheal Pollen)

eating organic is all right, IF you can afford to buy fresh food every two days, the organic produce goes bad Instantly! where the non- gmo foods which are not organic last for weeks! organic produce is smaller, and has zero shelf cost almost 3 times as much! i could see the extra cost IF there were actual 'extra' costs to growing organic...basically we are paying the farmer extra for nothing! organic farming is far cheaper....only certification costs money...

are you a farmer? because i am. and there is not more work associated to organic farmer than regular farming. its cheaper, no bug sprays or chemical foods/additives are applied. the food used as organic are cheaper than chem foods, and are often composted ON THE FARM at zero extra cost and need no leeching of the soil which cost money&water.all farm labour is intensive, picking less and smaller fruits/vegetables, using less trucks to transport cost way less the extra cost is for the farmers losses

This is all pretty scary. I live in Malaysia a third world country. You ask the greengrocer if his product is organic he might not know what it is? you ask him if its non GMO he might not even know what it is.
