Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes he is winning the war in the Middle East, and is ignoring calls from the US to show restraint, former chief of the general staff Lord Richard Dannatt has said.

He told Sky's Kay Burley the attacks in Lebanon over the weekend show that the Israeli prime minister thinks he can "press on" with the conflict.

"A ground invasion is increasingly threatened." he added.

He does not "think" he is winning, he is indeed "winning"... Israel has stopped playing games.

Well, yeah, I have Israel up by about 35 points right now. If this was an NRL game, I've got it 35-0 and there's five minutes left.

Both of them look quite disappointed at Israel's recent successes. I would like to inform these two that Israel doesn't attack Lebanon or the Houthis or thinking about ground assault because Netanyahu wants to escape his trials. Netanyahu is hated by most Israelis and is not the issue. It's the army and people of Israel who want these attacks and are willing to make the sacrifices needed because Hezbollah and the Houthis, just like Hamas, continue to attack Israel and make life for the Israelis citizens very difficult. Tens of thousands of Israelis had to leave their homes in northern Israel because of Hezbollah attacks on their towns and villages. Israel is fighting for its survival, not because it likes to see its soldiers fall in the fighting.

Iran has more to lose than Israel. They won’t escalate and Netanyahu will take advantage of it

One thing that irks me is that everyone knows Iran is the hand behind a lot of the troubles in the middle East yet no one is doing anything to them. How can everyone be 'afraid' of Iran?

While some oppressive regimes may survive for extended periods, none have done so indefinitely. Over time, oppression tends to generate resistance, and history has shown that even the most powerful regimes eventually weaken or fall due to a combination of internal and external factors.

Israel will be no exception
