State news agency Xinhua announced on Saturday that Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Hong Kong for the 25th anniversary of the city's transfer to mainland China (Jun 25).

This will be Xi's first known travel outside of China since the COVID-19 in January 2020.
The 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland will be commemorated at a gathering that President Xi Jinping will attend, according to Xinhua.

It said, "Xi, who is also chairman of the Central Military Commission and general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, will also attend the inauguration ceremony of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's sixth-term administration.

It is common for Chinese presidents to visit the city on significant handover anniversary dates. Xi last paid a visit to the former British colony in 2017 to swear in city mayor Carrie Lam.

Of the recent weeks, there has been a spike in COVID-19 infections in the city, with two incoming high officials among the most recent instances. This has raised questions about whether Xi will visit the former British colony.
